Use of force medicals
Medicals for use of force employment
If you employ people in the armed forces, you need to carry out use of force medicals. Whether joining the security industry, federal, state or local police or defence force… The hardest parts of the application are physical tests. Becoming a law enforcement officer is a challenging role. People who work in the forces need to be able to act quickly. They also need to be able to respond to all kinds of situations. Officers of the law are self-directed and responsible for their actions. Along with the physical demands of the armed forces… There’s also the psychological aspect. All of this considered, it’s important that employees are fit for working in the industry. Not being so could be life threatening to themselves and others.
What’s included in use of force medicals?
Use of force medicals are demanding. It’s important that employees don’t aggravate existing medical conditions. Applicants must undergo a health screening and around a dozen tests as part of:
- Medical history questionnaire
- Screening
- Medical Assessment
Age requirements differ depending on the job. For example, the police force has no maximum age for applicants. But a police force applicant must be physically fit for the job. Medical conditions that could result in a serious threat to safety aren’t permitted. For example, an asthma attack could have disastrous results for all those involved.
Are you psychologically suited to this line of work?
Aside from the physical demands of working in the forces, mental health is another factor. Being hospitalised or receiving treatment for mental health issues limits employment options. Working in the armed forces requires mental stability. It also requires being able to understand human behaviour. Depending on the job, learning disabilities and ADHD may be considered case-by-case.
Working with firearms and other restraints
People who work in the forces need to operate a firearm. It’s rare that an officer of the law needs to use a gun. But when the time comes, it’s a critical task. Workers in law enforcement sometimes have to respond to physical assault. And they’re accountable for applying handcuffs and other restraints.
Use of force medicals help determine whether applicants are at peak performance. This will ensure the worker is able to handle difficult situations with ease.
